As you know, he is a very dedicated, professional lawyer who has had his head down in the law for the past 15 years or so. This is the first time he has been asked to take on some management responsibility, which of course requires man-management skills.

We agreed for you to provide him with some one-to-one coaching over a few months. It involved him receiving 360-degree feedback from all members of the team. It was quite challenging for him but he was keen to get involved and progress.

He became more aware of how he interacts with other members of the team not only one-to-one but also in group discussions. As a result, the entire team has noticed a positive change in his bahavior, which bodes well for his future management challenge.

No doubt he will require further coaching as he progresses but you have handed him some self help skills that have enabled him to overcome personal barriers to develop into a mature manager of people.
